FIRST AID: THE NATURAL WAY

Want to be savvy with your First Aid Kit but don’t want to cost the earth or your back pocket?

Find out how to stock an all-natural first aid kit and positively impact the environment, personal and financial wellbeing.

Our “modern world” is filled with synthetic materials and consumable often-toxic substances, which do put ourselves under enormous immune pressure, especially with our little ones. Most of us resort to the ‘traditional’,  yet harmful remedies, without much thought into what is entering or applied to our bodies.

The average woman puts 515 Synthetic chemicals on her body every day without knowing. Most of which absorbs into the skin within seconds of application, causing wear and tear, and long-lasting effects on our bodies.

These chemicals we call ‘cosmetics’ come in all variants. However, the real killer are the hidden substances, the bulk fillers, that should have a warning sign next to them on the ingredients list.  DANGER: Paraben, the silent but deadly killer- located in most common lotions, deodorants, hair products and cosmetics. Paraben is full of chemicals used to preserve products in the medical cabinet for that much longer. Sounds convenient right, but is it necessarily good for you?  Phthalates, Sulphates, Toluene are just some of the few nasties to keep an eye out for.

It’s no wonder the statistics of skin, food, and internal allergies are increasing by the second.

IT'S TIME, to have a good look at what we can do to reduce the allergenic stressors on our human systems, and on our environment. In my experience, natural products are often the most effective means of fighting infections, allergies and injuries in the most holistic manner. Creating a natural first aid kit will help you save money, minimise the use of toxic products, reduce packaging and create very little wastage.

Let’s strip it back and go all natural shall we?

This list contains all of the necessities that are considered to be the bare bone essentials for a natural, minimalist first aid kit:

  1. It’s out with the old and in with the BAMBOO. Natural adhesive wound care is an all round must for the all-natural first aid kit.  Luckily we have found a solution that is made from 100% organic bamboo fibre, latex, paraben and sulphate free. PATCH. https://patchstrips.com/. Perfect for the hypoallergenic skin types, the conscious shopper, and sports enthusiasts. PATCH provides a solution for all! PATCH adhesives are infused with all-natural extracts in the gauze, that work at assisting the healing process of your wounds ie. activated charcoal, aloe vera, coconut oil and bamboo fibre. A perfect wound coverage for all grazes, cuts, scars, and infections.

  2. Keeping it cool with WELEDA’S ALOE VERA COOLING GEL. This is my hidden gem in every first aid kit. Featuring cooling aloe vera plant extract and echinacea, that works at oxygenating the skin and drawing out any unwanted impurities. I lather this on any unexpected scalds, burns, blisters, inflammation, eczema and rashes that appear. The packaging is also perfect and compact, with a minimalist effect.

  3. When it comes to compression BANDAGES & SWABS, finding a natural alternative can be difficult. My advice? Make sure you always look for organic cotton (free from pesticides, and herbicides), and organic bamboo fibre. These are the most ethical, environmentally sustainable options too.  Not to mention, are highly important to have on standby, especially for the little ones.

  4. Cannot go wrong with a bit of APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. Once you get past the acquired taste, it works wonders for stomach upset, pain, or reducing sinus infections and head colds. One shot of this magical concoction and you’ll instantly feel better. MACROS Apple Cider Vinegar comes in a handy 500ml bottle, suitable and easy to store away.  If the taste is too strong to shot, you can dilute it in water, or turn it into a beautiful salad dressing.

  5. EPSOM SALT is the all-around alleviate of constipation, muscle soreness, and sore throats. When wintertime hits, I like to do a daily gargle to clear my throat and reduce inflammation. Bathing in Epsom salt is perfect for relieving stiffness and tight joints too, not to mention the beautiful taste of applying it to your food (but don’t go overboard).

  6. COCONUT OIL the ‘modern day miracle cure’. This is a must-have in every first aid kit. Coconut oil has gone from ‘wonder cooking ingredient’ to ‘perfect body applicant’ very quickly. Wanna know why? It’s naturally antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal agents are fantastic for fighting infection, rehydrating or healing wounds or scars.

  7. MANUKA HONEY- the perfect remedy for sore throats and oncoming colds. One spoonful of this, or a drop in hot water and honey. I keep a small tube of 70+ Manuka in my first aid kit at home. Very useful for acid reflux, reducing stomach acid, acne, eczema, treating burns wounds, and varying allergies. It is the ‘all-rounder’ product in the kit.

  8. Last but not least CITRONELLA- BASED INSECT REPELLANT is a no-brainer for fighting off the little suckers. Lucky for us most herbal repellents contain citronella oil already and are the most natural solution to insect repellant.

Creating an all-natural first aid kit doesn’t have to be difficult. Use these tips as a guideline for the most natural, eco-friendly DIY kit!
